Mystical Matters: Dr. Dann Wigner Visits Church of the Heavenly Rest as Scholar in Residence
Diocesan News

The Church of the Heavenly Rest was proud to have Dr. Dann Wigner as our scholar in residence, January 11-15. Wigner offered a Wednesday night forum detailing spiritual practices and “demystifying” mystical experiences. He shared that God often shows up in ordinary daily life. Spiritual practices help us better tune our bodies and souls to notice God’s activity.
Participants were able to practice lectio divina in small groups, leading to a closing compline service. Additionally, he led a Saturday retreat for Heavenly Rest’s Exploring Spiritual Treasure mentor team and clergy. This was a time to slow down and be together, for moments of rest and reflection. It was also an opportunity to share stories of faith and re-energize this dedicated group. Wigner capped off a great week with a Sunday morning forum where folks could engage in meditation and share their spiritual treasure through deep listening and response. Wigner offered this prayer from the Book of Common Prayer to center our time in community:
57. For Guidance
Direct us, O Lord, in all our doings with thy most gracious
favor, and further us with thy continual help; that in all our
works begun, continued, and ended in thee, we may glorify
thy holy Name, and finally, by thy mercy, obtain everlasting
life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Wigner is the author of many books including Thinking Spiritually in Small Groups: The Practice of Mystical Reflection, a text used during our meaningful time with him.
