ST. CHRISTOPHER'S TRUNK OR TREAT

Presiding Bishop Michael Curry says. “If it’s not about love, it’s not about God.” Loving people is helping people whom you do not know. Loving people is helping people you may never see again. Loving people is not always easy. It is easy to love people you know and trust, so greater love requires getting out in your community and including people you normally would not know or have any connection to.  

St. Christopher’s uses Halloween to get to know people in our community. On October 28, 2023, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, we hosted Trunk or Treat. Canterbury students from Texas Tech University joined us. We gave fliers to the principal to give out to the students at the elementary school diagonal from the church.

I acknowledge that giving out candy, books, and small toys to cute kids dressed up in costumes does not qualify as strenuous. I find it a great deal of fun. I think the parents had a fun time also. It was a safe spot for children to have a good time.  

Each year, we give out books in addition to candy and toys. As literacy and getting books out in the community is important to me, this was another way to share and show love. Maybe not a traditional kind of love, but a type of love. Learning to love and be there for people you do not know does not have to start with big steps. Start with what you can do and work from there. One definition of love is being there for people.
