St. Stephen's, Lubbock Honored by Lubbock Classroom Teacher's Association

St. Stephen’s was recently honored by the Lubbock Classroom Teacher’s Association. They received the “Friend of Education” award for their work supporting Hardwick Elementary School. This past school year, they have provided weekend snack bags, school supplies, winter coats, and Christmas gifts. St. Stephen’s main involvement is providing weekend snack bags. This is their eighth year delivering them. The program began at Bowie Elementary with 40 students. Bowie closed and they picked up Hardwick. In the past 3 years, they have averaged over 60 bags per week, the entire school year. They are currently serving 63 students.

Recently, a news clip highlighted Dina Jeffries, of the South Plains Food Bank. She stated that 3 out of 4 students in Lubbock ISD are food insecure. There are some schools as high as 94%. She stated that with the rising cost of food items and a drop in volunteers, their service to 21 schools had come to an end. They are working on solutions.

This is a critical time and need for these children. St. Stephen’s would be happy to share ways to get this program started in your church. They send home 14 items in each bag per week, for a cost of just under $5.00 per bag. For more information, please contact Debbie Copeland, 806-799-3439.
