About Bishop Mayer

The Rt. Rev. James Scott Mayer is the Fifth Bishop of the diocese-northwest-texas (Number 1035 in the American Succession).

Elected: November 22, 2008, at st-pauls-lubbock on the second ballot.
Consecrated: March 21, 2009, at First United Methodist Church, Lubbock, with Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori as chief consecrator.

Education: BBA from Texas Tech University (1977); MDiv from Seminary of the Southwest (1992).
Ordinations: Deacon in 1992 (Bp. Donis Patterson); Priest in 1993 (Bp. James Stanton) in the Diocese of Dallas.
Parish Ministry: Curate at St. James' (Texarkana); Associate Rector (1994) and Rector (1995–2009) at Church of the Heavenly Rest (Abilene).
Episcopal Service: Provisional Bishop of the Diocese of Fort Worth (2015–2022) during legal challenges with the breakaway diocese. Following its 2022 reunification with the Diocese of Texas, he served as Assisting Bishop in Texas, concluding oversight of the North Region at the end of 2022.
